What does your week usually involve in regards to work?
I oversee the branding and marketing of our ongoing services here at URSU and The Owl and help plan and develop future services and projects to better the student experience here on campus. I’m constantly looking for new opportunities to get the message out about URSU’s fantastic services, from social media to our website; if it has our logo on it between my incredible team and myself, we have probably worked on it.
Are you a student? If so, what year of study and what field?
I am not a student; I’ve been out of school for over ten years now though it certainly doesn’t feel like that long. I studied Broadcast & Media Production at Assiniboine Community College in Brandon, Manitoba. It was a short two-year crash course, but it helped me quickly learn the skills necessary to jump into the fun world of media and marketing. The critical thing with marketing is you’re never done learning, new platforms and formats spring up all the time, and you need to be open to learning new things and adapting for the future.
How will this job help you in that field in the future and right now?
This position at URSU has been a fantastic experience for me; I love working on several different projects in the marketing space. I bring my years of experience in broadcast television and expertise in online media and advertising to help elevate the URSU brand while allowing me to continue growing and learning.
What do you like the most about your job? What do you like most about working at URSU?
I like the people I work with and the opportunities that this job has provided. The staff at URSU have been outstanding since the day I started, and the constant growth and opportunities ensure it’s never a dull moment. The team is always working on something new and exciting, and that keeps the passion for this job alive for me. What are the biggest challenges or obstacles?
Timelines will always be a big challenge or obstacle for our department or any marketing department. Sometimes you have to make it happen in little to no time, but it’s the fantastic small team I oversee, making this all happen. I’m thrilled to be working with people who understand the organization very well while also producing fantastic work under pressure. It’s not something we like to do, but sometimes we have to do it. I’m excited to see how this next year for URSU and the University of Regina will go.
How does your work benefit the students of the University of Regina and its Federated Colleges? How does it benefit the community?
It’s my job and my team’s job to help promote the excellent services that URSU has to offer to students, from our U-Pass provides affordable transportation on and off-campus to our URSU Cares Pantry, which helps provide free food to students in need. I enjoy doing this, helping the team here at URSU create these great programs that can help better students on campus. URSU has so many services for students, and it’s my job to ensure we can communicate all our offerings to the students as a whole.
What have you learned during your time working with URSU?
Since starting this position in February 2021, it’s been exciting. I’ve been learning lots about the University of Regina community and also about managing the team. It’s hard to pinpoint a single thing I have learned, but I feel I learn something new every day; it may be something small or big, but I keep learning each day, and that’s key to remember. You’re never too old to learn something; when you stop learning, you stop growing as a person, and that’s never good.
