Queer City Cinema, the international queer media and performance art festival of Regina, is presenting its 3rd instalment of queer performance this coming January. This year’s festival, entitled Performatorium, will take place January 19-21, 2012 at Neutral Ground Gallery and the University of Regina.
International in scale, performers will include:
Cindy Baker (Saskatoon) // Heather Cassils (L.A./Montreal) // Zackary Drucker (L.A.) // Helena Goldwater (London) // Jamie Lewis Hadley (London) // George Stamos (Montreal)
For more information about performatorium, please visit – queer citycinema.ca
The festival will also be presenting a Professional Wrestling Workshopinstructed by one of the performers, Jamie Lewis Hadley, himself a former professional wrestler in London, England.
Jamie conducts these workshops with althletes, dancers, actors, performance artists and artists in mind and those who wish to gain a better understanding of the physical and artistic challenges of professional wrestling for whatever reason.
Queer City Cinema wants to promote this workshop to the local athletic and arts communities, specifically those individuals that use their bodies as part of their practice as artists or those wanting to explore it as a potential source for inspiration. We would appreciate having the following information sent out to your colleagues, students or membership if possible.
Professional Wrestling Workshop with Jamie Lewis Hadley
Balfour Collegiate – 1245 College Ave
WORKSHOP STARTS @ 10AM AND ENDS @ 5PM
ADMISSION - $50 (INCLUDES CATERED LUNCH)
BOOKINGS ON-LINE - queercitycinema.ca
The emphasis of the workshop is on the potentiality of the body. The kinaesthetic demands of Professional Wrestling will be used as a practical methodology in an attempt to stimulate the participant’s engagement with their body as a corporeal site.Rhythm, pattern, weight distribution, endurance and posture are all crucial elements of the discipline and the skills learned from this physical exploration will benefit any artist who works with their body as a communicative device. The intensive will be structured around progressively learning the fundamental physical and psychological principles of wrestling. During the intensive, participants will begin to explore the concept of ‘storytelling’ or the ‘psychology’ of putting on a wrestling match. Within the discipline, the ability to capture and manipulate the spectator’s attention and emotions is crucial, and from this radical approach to the performance/spectator relationship there is huge potential for the acquisition of these skills to be translated into the participant’s own practice.
Please note: Professional Wrestling is an incredibly physical activity: bumps, bruises and sprains are common; therefore to minimize the risk of serious injury, applicants should have a reasonably good level of fitness and flexibility.
Jamie Lewis Hadley has been training and performing within the wrestling community for over 8 years. Since 2009 he has been crafting and presenting work that utilizes the experiences within this community to make challenging work that interrogates the politics of violence, duration and spectator complicity. In 2010 he received a major commission from The Old Vic and Ideastap to put on two huge wrestling shows in the heart of London. He also recently completed an AHRC funded research project that investigated the performance of masculinities within professional wrestling, and how these performances interact with the dissemination of pain.
To register for the Professional Wrestling Workshop, please visit queercitycinema.ca and sign up for one of the 16 spots available.Workshop is restricted to 18 years of age and older. Please arrive @ 9:45AM in order to be ready to start the workshop at 10AM. Although not necessary, those who wish to bring knee and elbow pads may do so for added protection. Insurance waivers must be signed to participate in workshop.

Ted Jaleta, born in Ethiopia, knew from an early age the importance of education and spent years away from home to improve his own lot in life through schooling. He was on track to become a world-class long distance runner when civil war broke out in Ethiopia in the 1970s. He was caught in a peaceful demonstration, imprisoned and tortured. He escaped with his life and immigrated to Canada in 1982 as a refugee.
Drawing from the priceless perspective of his real life experience, Ted will speak to the plight of refugees around the world, with particular focus on the issues of the inaccessibility of education, and the gift of a Canadian education.
All proceeds to WUSC’s Shine a Light campaign, raising money to help girls access education in refugee camps around the world.

The Regina Downtown Business Improvement District has partnered with the University of Regina's Faculty of Arts to launch a summer long public lecture series: Profs in the Park. The series, which begins Tuesday, June 7 over the noon hour, will bring University of Regina professors, students and their community partners to Regina's Victoria Park to deliver interactive and fun public talks.
Sylvain Rheault (French) and Gail Chin (Visual Arts) kick off the series with: 'Cosplay With Us'.
Rheault and Chin explain the fundamentals of cosplay, a performance exercise wherein fans create and wear costumes depicting their favourite fictional characters - most commonly from comic books, animé and science fiction genres - and meet up at sci-fi and comic book conventions. Come dressed as your favourite fictional character and join in the fun!
Installments of the Profs in the Park series will take place Tuesdays 12:15 p.m. - 12:45 p.m., from June 7 to August 30 (with the exception of July 19) in the Southeast corner of the park (across from the Hotel Saskatchewan).

Presented by Jeremy Morgan, Diefenbaker Policy Fellow
Johnson-Shoyama Graduate School of Public Policy
The state of cultural policy in Canada raises important questions about the future of public support for Aboriginal arts and culture while pointing to several issues that can be applied to cultural development as a whole. At a time when policy emphasis appears to have shifted from culture's educational importance to its commercial potential and from creativity in the arts to participation, public funding policy is challenged to address the unique importance of the creative expression of Aboriginal peoples. In his presentation, Jeremy Morgan will explore current policy approaches and the possibilities of a new framework for developing policy in this area.
Jeremy Morgan has been actively involved with the arts and cultural communities in Saskatchewan for over 22 years. From September 1999 until March 2010, he was the Executive Director/Chief Executive Officer of the Saskatchewan Arts Board. During his tenure, the Arts Board initiated and/or partnered in a number of new programs including several which directly support Aboriginal artists and communities, arts and learning, creative industries, touring and access and public engagement.
